BAPE – Kisah Brand Ikonik A Bathing Ape

Sneakers.co.id – BAPE atau A Bathing Ape adalah perusahaan pakaian Japan yang berspesialisasi dalam urban street fashion. Di Indonesia bape sangat dikenal sebagai salah satu merek branded.

Jika kita coba telusuri awal mula merek BAPE, maka kita akan dibawa kembali ke daerah Harajuku Shibuya di Tokyo Japan dan merupakan salah satu pelopor merek urban fashion Jepang yang dimulai pada awal 1990-an. Sementara pengaruh logo dan gayanya berasal dari film Planet of the Apes, Bape lebih dikenal karena penggunaan produksi yang sangat terbatas sehingga permintaan produk-produknya meroket.

SEJARAH SINGKAT BAPE – A APE BATHING

Nama lengkap merek ini adalah A Bathing Ape di Lukewarm Water dan didirikan oleh Nigo pada tahun 1993. Desainer, produser, drummer, dan DJ ini telah menjadi bagian aktif dari Teriyaki Boyz, grup hip-pop Jepang yang berasal dari Yokohama yang berkontribusi pada OST Fast & Furious – Tokyo Drift. BAPE bermula dari gagasan dua siswa yang bersekolah di sekolah yang sama dan idenya berbentuk toko di Harajuku bernama NOWHERE – merek yang nantinya akan dihidupkan kembali oleh Nigo dan senior sekolahnya, Jun Takahashi dari ketenaran UNDERCOVER.

Nama BAPE terinspirasi dari gaya hidup memanjakan, kemewahan, dan malas dari pemuda Jepang dari sudut oandang Nigo. Yaitu pandangan Nigo terhadap metode mandi Jepang di mana mandi di air suam-suam kuku dianggap sebagai kesenangan berlebihan / kemewahan.

Pada awalnya, merek mempertahankan pendekatan pemasaran yang cerdas dengan tetap underground dan menjual dengan volume rendah. Awalnya, mereka bahkan tidak mengiklankan merek melalui media massa tradisional tetapi kemudian mengejutkan dunia dengan kolaborasi Pepsi pada tahun 2001. Sejak itu BAPE menjadi pusat perhatian.

Tepat 10 tahun kemudian, Bape menghantam pantai Amerika ketika ikon hip-hop Pharrell Williams dan Nigo bergabung yang akhirnya menjadi co-owner dan kepala desainer dari lini pakaian Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club. Ini agak kontra-intuitif untuk Nigo karena langkah tersebut menghasilkan produksi massal.

Merek Jepang pada umumnya cenderung lebih fokus pada aspek kreatif dari pekerjaan mereka daripada menghasilkan uang dengan cepat. Inilah alasan mengapa merek Jepang membutuhkan waktu lebih lama untuk menskala secara global. Terlepas dari itu, pasar massal AS membawa banyak kesuksesan bagi BAPE tetapi setelah beberapa tahun, mulai gagal. Ketika permintaan turun, merek tersebut mengalami penurunan nilai dan mengakibatkan Nigo menjual 90,27% sahamnya kepada raksasa Fashion Hong Kong I.T sebesar $ 2,8 juta (USD) pada tahun 2011.

Merek ini juga menelurkan garis alternatif yang disebut Aape yang merupakan koleksi lebih banyak pakaian kasual dari A Bathing Ape dan berfokus pada kenyamanan dan bahan yang lebih ringan. Baris lain yang disebut Mr. Bathing Ape menempel pada barang dan kemeja yang sedikit lebih premium, dll

Tentang TOMOAKI “NIGO” NAGAO

Nigo lahir pada tahun 1970 di Maebashi, Jepang. Meskipun ia sebagian besar dikenal karena keterlibatannya dengan Bape, ada beberapa aspek lain dalam karirnya. Dia adalah DJ untuk Teriyaki Boyz, memiliki label rekaman, adalah seorang drummer, adalah desainer utama untuk Billionaire Boys Club dan Human Made yang keduanya merupakan merek Pharrell William, dan memiliki acara TV sendiri bernama Nigoldeneye di MTV Jepang. Dia juga dikenal sebagai penggemar Star Wars.

Pakaian dan Sepatu Bape masih sangat mahal untuk ukuran kantong kita. Di Indonesia sendiri mulai banyak diperjualbelikan beberapa tahun belakanga. Para hypebeast dan sneakerhead Jakarta dan kota besar lain di Indonesia paling tidak punya koleksi BAPE. Belakangan sering terlihat di instagram juga cewek-cewek cantik dengan hoodie camo shark.

Jadi kita bisa sampai pada kesimpulan, meskipun eksklusivitas merek telah menurun banyak selama bertahun-tahun, apa pun yang berkaitan dengan camo sebagai ciri khas dari merek ini masih laku keras Sementara Nigo sang pendiri asli telah pindah fokus ke hal-hal lain. Walau begitu kita semua akan mengakui Nigo adalah sosok jenius dan masih terus mengukir sejarah untuk urban culture Japan maupub seluruh dunia.

Hingga kini BAPE masih berkibar dan menghasilkan kolaborasi yang mengejutkan. Awal tahun lalu BAPE berkolaborasi dengan Adidas melalui Adidas Football by BAPE. Sekali lagi perpaduan antara olah raga dan urban culture.
