Carhartt: Dari Seragam Kerja Jadi Ikon Streetwear Anak Muda

Dulu, brand asal Amerika ini hanya fokus bikin pakaian kerja yang punya durable tall, khusus buat petani, sopir truk, sampai pekerja konstruksi yang butuh outfit tahan banting. Tapi seiring berjalannya waktu, Carhartt mulai menarik perhatian komunitas subkultur mulai dari skaters, graffiti artist, dan musisi underground.

Style rugged and statement kuat dari Carhartt bikin brand ini pelan-pelan bertransformasi jadi simbol autentisitas dan perlawanan. Dari workshop pindah ke street corner, dari ladang ke panggung musik. Carhartt jadi pilihan utama buat mereka yang pengen tampil beda, tapi tetap jujur sama diri sendiri.

Asal Mula Carhartt

Carhartt pertama kali didirikan pada tahun 1889 oleh Hamilton Carhartt. Waktu itu, ia memulai usaha kecil-kecilan hanya dengan empat mesin jahit dan lima orang karyawan. Visi utamanya simpel, tapi kuat: “honest value for an honest dollar”, alias kualitas jujur untuk kerja keras yang jujur.

Di masa awal, Carhartt memproduksi pakaian kerja dari bahan duck canvas and denim yang terkenal kuat dan tahan lama, khusus buat para pekerja rel kereta api yang butuh perlindungan ekstra di medan berat. Nggak heran, pakaian buatan mereka langsung jadi andalan di kalangan pekerja.

Beberapa desain awal Carhartt bahkan masih eksis sampai sekarang, as bib overall and Chore Coat. Keduanya bukan cuma berhasil melewati ujian waktu, tapi juga berubah jadi simbol gaya yang ikonik di dunia streetwear.

Nggak cuma fokus bikin pakaian kerja, Carhartt juga sempat bereksperimen keluar dari zona nyamannya. Di tahun 1960-an, mereka mulai coba-coba bikin berbagai lini produk baru, mulai dari sports apparel, jaket kasual, sampai jeans. Langkah ini jadi bukti kalau Carhartt nggak takut berevolusi dan beradaptasi dengan tren, meskipun akarnya tetap kuat di dunia workwear.

Munculnya Carhartt WIP

Di akhir tahun 70-an hingga awal 80-an, seorang desainer asal Swiss bernama Edwin Faeh sedang jalan-jalan ke pasar loak di Paris. Saat itu, matanya tertuju pada sebuah jaket bergaya “barn-look” yang terlihat sangat kokoh dan beda dari yang lain.

Bahan kainnya tebal, kasar, tapi punya daya tarik tersendiri, sampai dia terpikir, “nggak ada yang bisa merobek kain kayak gini.” Saking penasarannya, Faeh langsung memborong semua jaket sejenis yang bisa ia temukan hari itu juga.

After that, dia mulai riset dan menelusuri asal usul jaket tersebut. Penelusurannya akhirnya membawanya ke Amerika, dan di tahun 1989, Edwin Faeh berangkat langsung ke markas besar Carhartt. Di tahun yang sama, dia resmi membawa Carhartt masuk ke pasar Eropa.

Faeh melihat potensi besar dalam produk-produk Carhartt, nggak cuma sebagai pakaian kerja, tapi juga sebagai brand yang bisa menarik berbagai kalangan yang menghargai desain yang rapi, kualitas tinggi, dan tetap menghormati warisan serta keaslian gaya khas Carhartt.

On the other hand, Edwin Faeh mengambil langkah besar dengan mendirikan Work In Progress (WIP) sebagai distributor eksklusif Carhartt di Eropa. Faeh juga mulai mengembangkan koleksi versinya sendiri yang tetap berakar dari Carhartt original workwear, tapi dibalut dengan sentuhan baru yang lebih relevan untuk pasar Eropa.

Beberapa desain klasik Carhartt ia modifikasi, baik dari segi potongan, size, hingga detail agar lebih sesuai dengan selera dan gaya hidup anak muda Eropa yang lebih urban dan modis.

Nggak cuma itu, Faeh juga mulai memperkenalkan desain-desain baru, bahkan menjalin kolaborasi dengan berbagai brand fashion dan seniman kontemporer untuk menciptakan karya yang lebih segar dan edgy.

Langkah berani ini membuahkan hasil. Faeh membuka toko Carhartt WIP pertamanya di London pada tahun 1997, yang kemudian berkembang pesat menjadi jaringan lebih dari 80 toko di berbagai kota besar di seluruh dunia.

Alasan Carhartt Sekarang Lebih Dekat dengan Street Culture

Salah satu alasan kenapa Carhartt sekarang terasa begitu dekat dengan dunia street culture adalah karena brand ini berhasil terkoneksi dengan berbagai macam subkultur yang mengadopsinya seolah-olah itu bagian dari identitas mereka. Dan proses ini sebenarnya udah dimulai sejak tahun 1980-an di Amerika.

Waktu itu, para artis hip-hop di New York dan Los Angeles mulai melirik Carhartt. Mereka nggak tertarik karena tren, tapi karena kualitas bahan yang kuat dan tampilan utilitarian yang terkesan keras, jujur, dan apa adanya, pas banget sama semangat komunitas mereka.

Nama-nama besar kayak 2Pac, Eazy-E, Nas, sampai Beastie Boys sering terlihat mengenakan jaket atau celana Carhartt. Tanpa disengaja, mereka ikut mendorong brand ini keluar dari zona workwear dan masuk ke ranah streetwear.

Nggak lama setelah itu, gelombang gaya ini menyebar ke Eropa, dan di sanalah Carhartt WIP mulai mengambil peran penting dalam berbagai skena musik dan budaya underground, mulai dari rap, graffiti, skateboard, sampai seni jalanan. Brand ini jadi semacam “seragam tidak resmi” buat anak-anak urban yang hidup di pinggiran kota besar, tapi punya semangat ekspresi yang kuat.

Salah satu bukti awal dari adopsi ini bisa dilihat di film legendaris asal Prancis tahun 1995, La Haine. Di film tersebut, sang tokoh utama, yang mewakili generasi muda urban Eropa, terlihat mengenakan pakaian Carhartt WIP.

Since then, Carhartt aktif mendukung dan berkolaborasi dengan artis, musician, dan komunitas kreatif yang punya visi dan nilai yang sejalan.

Today, Carhartt WIP udah jauh melampaui statusnya sebagai brand pakaian kerja. Ia berkembang jadi platform kreatif yang ngebuka ruang untuk ekspresi budaya, collaboration, dan keterlibatan sosial. Carhartt juga membangun komunitas lewat berbagai proyek budaya yang keren.

Mereka bahkan punya tim skate sendiri dan departemen musik independen yang fokus mendukung skena-skena lokal maupun global. other than that, Carhartt WIP juga rutin mendukung berbagai seniman, kolektif kreatif, dan menerbitkan berbagai publikasi visual maupun audio yang penuh gaya dan makna.

Dari sisi kolaborasi, Carhartt WIP nggak main-main. Mereka pernah bekerja bareng dengan nama-nama besar seperti A.P.C., Converse, Fragment Design, Junya Watanabe, Nike, Underground Resistance, sampai label legendaris Motown.
