It is dedicated to world peace, and especially the absence of war and violence, as may be due to a temporary ceasefire in combat zones for access to humanitarian aid. The day was first celebrated in 1981, and celebrated by many countries, political group, military group, and the people.
In the year 2013, the day is dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to peace education, the main means of prevention to reduce war in a sustainable manner.
